Villa Rotonda Villa Rotonda Vicenza, Italy C.1550 - 1570 Architect: Andrea Palladio
Set on a hilltop on the outskirts of Vicenza, Italy this Pantheonic type villa one might suggest is "The Ultimate Belvedere"!
Its piano nobile, use of a square plan surmounted by a dome and the temple-like Ionic porticoes on all four sides are the villa's main features and source of inspiration to architects all across the globe for centuries.
Some of the interpretations of the villa include; Mereworth Castle in Kent, England and Chiswick House, London. As well as The Temple of the Four Winds by Vanbrugh which stands in the grounds of Castle Howard, Yorkshire, England, a model of which we have also made.
The influence of the villa stretched way beyond Europe, and in particular was to inspire Thomas Jefferson. He based both his design for Monticello on it as well as his entry in 1792 for a design for the United States' President's House.
