The gate was built after "the great fire" had destroyed the centre of London in 1666. It is attributed to the architect Sir Christopher Wren who was greatly influenced by French architecture. The Temple Bar is a symbol of importance to all lawyers and judges, "The Temple" being the legal centre of the City.
The model is very detailed on both sides and designed to be seen in the round. The legal system of Britain was adopted throughout the empire and North America. The Temple Bar model was commissioned by The Inns of Court of America in 1997 and each model has a full description of the Temple Bar's history.
