Built in 1896 to the design of Charles Haight this handsome gothic portal is remembered by all Yale students.

On the one side there is the enclosed world of the University, on the other the square and town.

The gate was named after a popular English Professor called William Lyon "Billy" Phelps.

The Latin inscription above the gate is the university’s motto;
"Lux et Veritas" (Light and Truth)

The upward face of the base of the sculpture is inscribed with the first two lines of the Alma Mata:

"Bright years, with pleasure rife,
the shortest, gladdest years of life."

Dimensions: 9.3"h x 8"w x 3"d
